Three standards, one structure
ISO 45001 covers occupational health and safety, ISO 9001 quality and ISO 14001 environmental management. All three share the same high-level structure: context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement.
Because the structure is shared, one system can meet all three: one policy library, one risk process, one set of inspections and one corrective action process, with the safety, quality and environmental detail inside it.
What an auditor will ask to see
Expect a certification auditor to sample records such as:
- WHS, quality and environmental policies, and evidence people acknowledged them
- hazard, risk and environmental aspect registers
- the legal requirements you have identified, and how you keep track of changes
- competence records: inductions, training, tickets and licences
- consultation and participation records, such as toolbox talks
- operational controls: SWMS, permits, inspection and test plans, environmental controls
- incidents, nonconformities, defects and corrective actions
- internal audits and management reviews
Certification
Certification is done by a certification body, which in Australia is usually accredited by JAS-ANZ. Software does not certify you. What it can do is keep the records the system depends on current, so the audit samples real work instead of documents made the week before.
Builders on Australian Government funded building work may also need accreditation under the WHS Accreditation Scheme run by the Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner, which has its own criteria.
How WHSComply fits
WHSComply holds the WHS, quality and environmental records on each project file, with a policy library acknowledged by version, a legislation tracker and an audit log under all of it. The audit pack export is set out to follow the clauses of ISO 45001, 9001 and 14001.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Does using WHSComply make us ISO 45001 certified?+
No. Certification comes from an accredited certification body auditing your system. WHSComply keeps the records that system relies on.
Is ISO 45001 required by law?+
No. The WHS laws are the legal requirement. Certification is voluntary, though many clients and tenders ask for it.
Do we need all three standards?+
Only the ones your clients and your own goals call for. Many builders start with ISO 45001 and add quality and environment to the same system later.
