Construction WHS software: what a builder should expect

A builder's WHS system has to work at the gate, in the site shed and in front of an auditor. Software earns its place when it keeps the records current as the work happens, not when someone rebuilds them later.

What a builder actually has to keep

Under the model WHS laws, the records follow the work: who is on site and whether they were inducted, which subcontractors are engaged and insured, the SWMS for each piece of high risk construction work, and the permits, inspections, incidents and consultation that went with it.

  • QR sign-in and site inductions for every project
  • subcontractors' ABN, trade and certificates of currency
  • White Cards, high risk work licences, trade licences and first aid
  • SWMS reviewed and approved before the work starts
  • permits, inspections, ITPs, toolbox talks, incidents and defects

Where paper and spreadsheets fall short

A paper sign-in sheet cannot tell you whether the person signing it holds a current ticket. A spreadsheet of insurances only warns you when someone opens it. A SWMS emailed to the site manager is approved when they get to it, which is often after the work has started.

WHS, quality and environment together

An integrated management system keeps safety, quality and environmental records in one place, set out to line up with ISO 45001, 9001 and 14001. For a builder that means the same project file holds the SWMS, the inspection and test plan and the environmental incident.

How WHSComply approaches it

WHSComply treats the project as the file. Subcontractors and workers keep their own details current through free accounts, records are made on a phone where the work happens, and every change leaves an audit entry with the previous value. When an auditor or client asks, the audit pack is an export.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is an integrated management system?+

One system for work health and safety, quality and environmental management, rather than three. It shares one set of policies, risks, inspections and corrective actions.

Does WHSComply work in every state?+

It is built on the model WHS Act and Regulations, which apply everywhere except Victoria, and tracks Victoria's OHS Act 2004 and its regulations alongside, with state variations noted.

Do subcontractors pay?+

No. Subcontractors, their workers and visitors signing in to your sites are never charged.
